Being a unique ecosystem in the British Isles, the Caledonian Pinewoods are home to some of the country’s rarest wildlife. It is considered to be one of the last remaining wildernesses in the British Isles and birds such as the Scottish Crossbill, Capercaille, Crested Tit, Common Goldeneye, Wood Sandpiper, Black and Red Throated Divers, breed no where else.
Apart from it’s unique bird inhabitants, the forest also plays hosts to a variety of equally rare and captivating mammals such as the Pine Marten, the Wild Cat, Red Squirrel, and Roe Deer.
Travelling a little further from your base here in Grantown on Spey, to the Moray Firth, you will be rewarded with Dolphins, Red Kites, Gannets, Geese, Waders, Divers, Grebes and Sea Duck. Nearby, Loch Ruthven hosts half the UK’s entire breeding population of Slavonian Grebe.
